Silverfish Control & Removal
Silverfish are small, wingless insects that are typically about 1/2 inch to 1 inch long. They are silvery-grey in colour and have a fish-like shape, hence their name. They are often considered to be a pest because they can damage books, paper products, and fabrics, as well as contaminate food.
Silverfish are often associated with damp environments and are attracted to areas with high humidity levels. They are commonly found in bathrooms, basements, attics, and other areas of the home that are prone to moisture problems. They are also known to feed on mold, fungi, and other organic matter that can be found in damp environments.

Silverfish Life cycle.
Silverfish have a simple life cycle, consisting of three stages: egg, nymph, and adult.
-
Eggs: Female silverfish lay small, white, oval-shaped eggs in groups of up to 20. The eggs are usually deposited in cracks and crevices in areas where silverfish are commonly found, such as bathrooms and kitchens.
-
Nymphs: After hatching from the eggs, the young silverfish, known as nymphs, resemble the adult in shape but are smaller and lighter in color. The nymphs undergo several molts as they grow and develop, shedding their skin each time.
-
Adults: Once the silverfish reach adulthood, they are about 1/2 inch to 1 inch long and have a silvery-gray color. They are able to reproduce and continue the life cycle by laying eggs.
The time it takes for silverfish to complete their life cycle varies depending on environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. In general, it takes about 3 to 4 months for silverfish to develop from egg to adult, although they can live for several years as adults.

Help reduce the attraction of your property to silverfish by:
-
Reduce food sources: Silverfish are attracted to starchy foods, such as cereals, grains, and pasta, as well as pet food. By storing these items in sealed glass jars or airtight containers, you can reduce the food sources available to silverfish.
-
Keep tidy: Silverfish are attracted to clutter and debris, so keeping your home tidy can help to reduce their attraction. Remove waste cardboard and old papers, and vacuum regularly to remove any food crumbs, dust, and debris.
-
Keep gutters clean: Silverfish are attracted to damp environments, so keeping your gutters clean and ensuring that water drains away from your property can help to reduce their attraction.
-
Use a dehumidifier: If you have an issue with damp in your property, using a dehumidifier can help to reduce the humidity levels and make the environment less attractive to silverfish.
-
Seal openings: Silverfish can enter your property through small cracks and openings in walls, ceilings, and floors. By sealing these openings, you can prevent them from entering and reduce their attraction to your property.
